Full Question: Is it healthy to be addicted to subspace?
Answer:
The term “addiction” can mean many things to many people. For our purposes, we’ll define addiction as follows:
Addiction is the repeated involvement with a substance or activity, despite the substantial harm it now causes, because that involvement was (and may continue to be) pleasurable and/or valuable.
It’s quite unlikely that any addiction is healthy with this definition. It’s possible you didn’t mean “addicted” in the strictest sense of the word, but more of a strong desire to enjoy subspace often but not to the level of unhealthy drive that interferes with your ability to function. If you look at it that way, there is nothing wrong with enjoying subspace and seeking in within playtime often, even every time.
Subspace is a mental and physical response to the high endorphins and adrenaline produced during play. Described as similar to a runner’s high, this is a good feeling and one to be enjoyed if you get there.
Depending on your craving for subspace, you could compare it to being an adrenaline junkie. Adrenaline junkies seek thrilling experiences, with some level of risk for rewards, like bungee jumping, rock climbing, extreme roller coasters, and cave diving. The feelings you get participating in these activities are similar to subspace from BDSM play.
Like anything else, you CAN become addicted to subspace and don’t want that.
- How much risk are you putting yourself in to reach subspace?
- Are you seeking out random partners and putting yourself in dangerous situations to get your fix?
- Are you seeking it so often that you aren’t allowing your body to recover fully between play sessions?
- Are you canceling plans with family and friends, skipping work, or other obligations to get your subspace fix?
As for if it’s healthy or not, I feel anything in moderation can be a beneficial life experience. As long as your cravings don’t interfere with your daily life, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to experience subspace as often as possible.
Be safe.
