Full Question: How do you get into subspace?
Answer:
Great question! Everyone will have different success rates for reaching subspace, and some people never get there. But let’s not dwell on that because subspace isn’t the only goal for playtime, right?
Subspace is a mental and physical response to the high levels of endorphins produced during play. It can manifest in many different ways and no one subspace is the same as another. It’s hard to describe what subspace is in specific terms because it’s unique to each individual. For some people, it is a sense of floating or out-of-body experience. For others, subspace is a quiet zen-like state. For me, it’s when pain during play becomes funny. I start laughing and giggling. I can take more pain then and ultimately just feel great.
How can you touch subspace?
Try to meditate during play. Relax and concentrate on your breathing. Let all of your muscles go. Finding that happy center will aid the endorphins through your system and eventually allow you to feel the euphoria others call subspace. If you fight the sensations, you will never get there.
Or try intensity. Subspace often comes about as a reactive and protective measure for intense sensation. Try overloading your system with sensation. This could be pain or pleasure; it doesn’t matter. The adrenaline will cause your heart to race, and you may go into a hyperactive state where subspace can settle once the endorphins pump in.
You should negotiate before playing what the Top will do if you reach subspace during the scene. Once in subspace, there is very little you can do. Your Top may stop play and allow you to float in that space for a while. They may shock you out of that space, so they can continue with play at any time (A pinch between the toes works great for that).
You can get “drunk” on subspace, so be careful if you are expected to drive home afterward. It is best to allow your body to normalize before attempting anything dangerous, like driving or walking home. This is a part of playing safely!
